Artist Bio - Sarah DiMento
Self Portrait

Sarah DiMento, was born Sarah D. Huntrods November 6, 1978 in Calgary, Alberta - the Canadian equivalent of Austin Texas. Living there most of her life with her father, an engineer turned computer consultant, teacher, musician, glassblower, and deep sea diver; and her mother, who has had far too many hobbies to mention. Exposed to a larger dose of Modern Art, Monty Python, and Pink Floyd than most children, she was certainly never ordinary, and she has always had a good relationship with her younger brother, whom she only ever beat up rarely.

Sarah learned how to draw at an early age, and by high school, had filled several sketchbooks, mostly with fantasy art. She then went to The Alberta College of Art and Design, where she decided to major in jewellery because it seemed to offer her more skills than their overly politicized drawing classes. Her high school goal to become a comic book artist was temporarily de-railed, until she created The Captain Electric Supercharger Ring as a jewellery project in 2001. The backstory she created for this project rekindled her interest in the comic book medium. That summer she created the first version of Ceph and took it online.

After taking a two year sabbatical at The University of Calgary, where she also worked as a computer tech and was introduced to 3D graphics programs, she put Ceph on hiatus. She returned to ACAD and graduated from the jewellery program in 2004. During her last semester, she developed an interest in film, and revived Captain Electric to do a full blown "mockumentary" video project. Sarah is now doing web design for a living, and devising plans for the future.

Some of her more telling interests include:

  • Science fiction, particularly the golden age authors such as Robert A. Heinlein, Theodore Sturgeon and Alfred Bester. She also loves science fiction movies and television, though her taste tends to be picky. She is definitely not a Star Trek fan, preferring more bizarre series like Farscape.
  • Her favorite childhood movies are The Yellow Submarine and The Little Shop of Horrors.
  • She used to be an anime fan until too much crap started crossing the pacific. The last anime series she truly loved was Cowboy Bebop.
  • Her favorite art styles are Art Nouveau. the German Expressionists, and 60s psychedelia.
  • She never read many superhero comics as a kid, but was reading Heavy Metal magazine years before she was legally allowed to buy it.
  • Her favorite kind of music is 70s rock, particularly Glam and early New Wave. Her current favorites are David Bowie (owns ALL his albums and more), Brain Eno (a very close second to Bowie), John Cale, Talking Heads, and Thomas Dolby. (though right now she is listening to The Beach Boys Pet Sounds. Go figure. ).
